Showcasing Interdisciplinary Research through Creative, Interactive Space
The Center for Embedded Networked Sensing lacks a centralized space that can accommodate an
interdisciplinary, collaborative approach to research and education. Facilities built more than 40 years ago are not able to support current research, which demands new levels of flexibility and interactivity. The proposed building for CENS is designed to move research beyond the traditional laboratory setting. The systems developed by CENS researchers will be operating throughout the building, not only
collecting data for ongoing research but showcasing the many practical uses this technology will serve.
The wireless networked embedded sensor systems will be located in and around spaces in which researchers and administrators are working, including mobile sensor modules moving along a network
of cables overhead.
Interactive displays in the entry and lobby will welcome visitors to the building and allow them to track ongoing experiments around the world. The displays will help connect CENS to the outside world, and will link the sensor systems regardless of their location.
The CENS facility will reflect the forward-looking nature of the technology being developed within its walls. The structure’s open and glass-enclosed space will showcase the research, and invite people to enter the building and learn more. It will provide faculty and students working within the Center with 6,000 square feet of space. The new facility will be built in an unused courtyard between Boelter Hall and the Mathematical Sciences building, and does not require the demolition of another building for
construction to begin.
This striking new addition to the UCLA engineering
complex offers a donor the opportunity to link his or her name with truly visionary
research.
The Center’s
partnerships with colleagues across campus and the world build on a rich history
of scientific innovation and achievement to create the advanced technologies
of tomorrow. An investment in CENS is a true investment in the future. |
